RULES OF CANDLE LIGHTING

The latest time for bringing in Shabbos corresponds to 18 minutes before sunset. During summer, according to custom, Shabbos is brought in earlier in most centres. This is the time when Communities Daven "Mizmor Shir Leyom HaShabbat" thus accepting Shabbos (approximately 15 minutes after the beginning of Mincha).

Based on this, the times published in the table below are THE LATEST TIMES for candle lighting.

However there is also an earliest time for candle lighting (1.25 relative hours before sunset), which is of little concern in most centres. But due to the late sunset in the Western Cape, knowledge of this earliest time is most significant in summer.

We therefore marked the EARLIEST time for candle lighting with . (Cape Town: November to mid-March, and Port Elizabeth: December to February). During this period, the latest time for lighting corresponds to 15 minutes after the beginning on Mincha in your Shul.
